How to make: Tonkatsu, which is a fried pork cutlet! You can eat this with rice on the side and tokatsu sauce on top. Often, it is paired with a side salad or shredded cabbage.
It really makes a good topping for Japanese-style curry.
Cooking time:
around 30 minutes
What you need:
- Pork loin (thick slice)-300g
- salt and pepper-to taste
- beaten egg – 1
- flour -enough to coat the slices
- bread crumbs -enough to coat the slices
- oil for frying – As needed
- Cabbage- As desired
- Cherry tomatoes- 4 pieces
- Tonkatsu sauce- As desired
Steps (Oil Frying)
For a richer taste, go with oil frying. You will get a classical taste and a golden brown coating if you fry in oil.
- slightly pound the pork and season with salt and pepper.
- coat 1 with flour, egg and bread crumbs
- Deep fry in oil at 170 to 180 degrees Celsius until crisp and golden brown.
- Garnish with shredded cabbage and Tonkatsu sauce, if desired.
Steps (Air Frying)
For a healthier option, you can also cook your tonkatsu in the air fryer! It is best to cook one slice at a time, but this can really take a lot of time because each slice needs to cook for around 20 minutes.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
- While the air fryer is preheating, prepare your tonkatsu by coating it in flour, dipping it in beaten egg, and coating it with panko breadcrumbs.
- Once the air fryer is preheated, spray the basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Place the breaded tonkatsu in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the basket.
- Cook the tonkatsu in the air fryer for about 10-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until it is golden brown and crispy on the outside and cooked through on the inside.
- Remove the tonkatsu from the air fryer and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve the tonkatsu with rice, tonkatsu sauce, and a side salad for a complete meal.
