How to make: Tonkatsu 豚カツ

How to make: Tonkatsu, which is a fried pork cutlet! You can eat this with rice on the side and tokatsu sauce on top. Often, it is paired with a side salad or shredded cabbage.

It really makes a good topping for Japanese-style curry.

Cooking time:

around 30 minutes

What you need:

  • Pork loin (thick slice)-300g
  • salt and pepper-to taste
  • beaten egg – 1
  • flour -enough to coat the slices
  • bread crumbs -enough to coat the slices
  • oil for frying – As needed
  • Cabbage- As desired
  • Cherry tomatoes- 4 pieces
  • Tonkatsu sauce- As desired

Steps (Oil Frying)

For a richer taste, go with oil frying. You will get a classical taste and a golden brown coating if you fry in oil.

  1. slightly pound the pork and season with salt and pepper.
  2. coat 1 with flour, egg and bread crumbs
  3. Deep fry in oil at 170 to 180 degrees Celsius until crisp and golden brown.
  4. Garnish with shredded cabbage and Tonkatsu sauce, if desired.

Steps (Air Frying)

For a healthier option, you can also cook your tonkatsu in the air fryer! It is best to cook one slice at a time, but this can really take a lot of time because each slice needs to cook for around 20 minutes.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.
  2. While the air fryer is preheating, prepare your tonkatsu by coating it in flour, dipping it in beaten egg, and coating it with panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Once the air fryer is preheated, spray the basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Place the breaded tonkatsu in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the basket.
  5. Cook the tonkatsu in the air fryer for about 10-20 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until it is golden brown and crispy on the outside and cooked through on the inside.
  6. Remove the tonkatsu from the air fryer and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
  7. Serve the tonkatsu with rice, tonkatsu sauce, and a side salad for a complete meal.
