Tucked away on a mountain in Kumamoto prefecture is a mystical shrine called Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. The shrine was made famous by being featured in the manga “Firefly Forest” by Yuki Midorikawa. So there are visitors all year round.
I went to the shrine in March, and though it was not as green as usual, it was still very beautiful and the place had a sense of sacred serenity to it.
There are over 260 steps and 100 lanterns lining the path, so bring shoes that are easy to climb in and clothes that you can move easily in!
About Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine
Enshrined here are the gods Izanagi no Mikoto, Izanami no Mikoto, and Ishiki Taishogun. It is also said that the spirit of the dragon (Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto), who created Mt. Aso, is enshrined here.
Nagi trees (梛) grow in the vicinity of the shrine. They are said to ward off evil and are sometimes made into amulets. These trees are also said to have the power to bind the hearts of men and women together, thus people come to the shrine to pray for success in their love and marriage.
Further up on the trail of the shrine is a large rock formation.
It is said that touching this formation will bring academic success and will empower you to overcome difficulties.
Overall, it’s a gorgeous and mysterious little shrine. If you are ever in Kumamoto, stop by and see it for yourself!
